Current #1 and defending champion Serena Williams withdraws from this week's tournament due to a left-knee injury.
Serena has been plagued by injuries throughout her career particularly on her left-knee and left ankle. Serena said she played the Sony Ericsson finals earlier this month against Victoria Azarenka with an injured left-knee. Serena struggled to move the entire match and lost to the hard-hitting teenager Azarenka 6-3,6-1. Then last week, Serena was upset by Klara Zakopalova in the frist round of the Andalucia Tennis Experience.
Azarenka also withdrew from the Family Circle Cup on Tuesday because of an injured shoulder.
Serena stands to lose her #1 ranking to Dinara Safina. This despite her victories at major tournaments including winning the US Open last year and the Australian Open earlier this year and being a finalist to Wimbledon last year.
